The winter beekeeping course begins on the 18th January 2019 and runs for eight weeks until the 8th March 2019. It will also include an additional one or two sessions later in the year at the PDBKA out apiary, to get you used to the idea of handling bees. The course will be held on a Friday evening at Portchester Community Centre in Westlands Grove, Portchester PO16 9AD and will run from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Our winter course for beginners is being run by John Perry who has been keeping bees for some years. He has several apiaries of his own which he runs with the help of his wife, Rita. He has previously been swarm co-ordinator for the Portsmouth Beekeepers, and also holds the position of Deputy Chairman for our club.

The course is aimed primarily at new beekeepers, novice beekeepers or anyone who has bees and has never done a theory course. Whilst the course is mainly theory there is also some practical work. The course is based around the British Beekeepers Basic Assessment Syllabus and whilst we do not expect you to take the exam on completion of the course it will ensure that you have all the knowledge you need to become a competent beekeeper. It will also give you the opportunity to talk to experienced beekeepers and meet like-minded people at the same level as yourselves and share your experiences with them.
Bookings for the course are now being taken and places will then be allocated on a first come, first served basis. There is a limit on the number of people we can accommodate and we are usually over - subscribed. You do not need to be a member of the Portsmouth and District Beekeepers Association to attend. The cost for non- members is £55.00 and for existing members is £40.00
