SUMMARY:Annual General Meeting and speaker talk
DESCRIPTION:Our AGM at Portchester   Parish Hall will be on 25th November and will start 7pm\, and will be followed at 7.30pm by a talk and guided tasting by the owner of Havant’s very own meadery. \nThe evening will consist of a presentation of our Annual Report and announcements on successful appointments\, followed by us then hearing how a lockdown hobby has turned into a fully fledged business\, and how they have adapted recipes to work for this setting. They will then kindly lead us through a guided tasting\, so this is a great opportunity to bring your partners and show them what additional delights can be made from our bees’ hard work. And\, of course\, there will be a festive raffle. \nAs mentioned at our last members’ meeting\, we truly value the support of every single volunteer who helps us to have a successful association\, and we would encourage everyone to consider whether they could help support via one of the available roles. \nRoles Available:\n·       Honorary Secretary\nThis is a predominantly administrative role where you will act as the key contact for receiving and passing on information to the committee\, members etc.\, coordinate the agenda/minutes for four trustee meetings a year\, and receive information from committee members for inclusion in the annual report. \n·       Shows Team Members\nIn this role you will be part of a team that helps decide which shows PDBKA should attend each year\, and the coordination of our attendance and the volunteers to run the stalls. \n·       Trustee (with or without portfolio)\nIn this role you take shared responsibility with the other trustees for the strategic and operational decisions made about the association. It is a fantastic way to help shape the direction of our association and ensure our activities support the achievement of our charitable objects. \nWe are keen to emphasise that these roles are not onerous\, and the other committee members will provide full support to anyone taking on a role. \nIf any of the roles above\, or indeed any other role\, sounds of interest to you\, please complete the short online nomination form by 5th November\, so that these can be taken forward ahead of the AGM. \nMany thanks \nPDBKA Hon Sec\nOn behalf of the Trustees

SUMMARY:BBKA September Zoom Talk
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Andrew Durham \nTopic: Yellow-legged Asian Hornet – Is Nest Destruction a Dangerous Delusion? Is Spring Trapping the Lesser of Two Evils? \nWhen: Wednesday 3rd September 7.30pm \nAndrew is a Cambridgeshire beekeeper who started his research into the Asian Hornet (a.k.a. Yellow-legged Hornet – Vespa velutina) in 2014\, travelling around France and researching the impact of the hornet on French beekeeping. The talk: as the hornet continues to make ground on the continent and is threatening to get established in mainland UK\, this is an important and timely contribution to a debate that beekeepers are going to have to have before the NBU withdraws from the front-line battle to eradicate the hornet. Beekeepers on the continent are getting drawn into the general fight against the hornet and are being overwhelmed. Andrew examines the pros and cons of the different schemes in operation in France (and Jersey) and he suggests how beekeepers could best use their limited resources to serve their bees. \nZoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83766798003?pwd=MAKwGQjDdNspbbx6Rurhi3fHKr1vBI.1\nMeeting ID: 837 6679 8003    Passcode: 886868 \nA recording of this talk will be available on the BBKA YouTube for those unable to watch live.

SUMMARY:February 2025 Members Meeting – Using Nucleus Boxes
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time: 25th of February 2025\nSpeakers: Brian Herbert\nTitle: Using Nucleus Boxes (Face to Face meeting)\nBrief description: Nucleus boxes are very much the Cinderellas of beekeeping\, possibly because they are so expensive to buy.  Nevertheless\, nuc boxes can be a valuable aid to managing your bees – colony sizes\, queen rearing\, general inspections.  Costs can be managed if you are willing to knock up your own boxes and are not too precious about looks!   With proper aftercare these boxes can give years of service. We’ll take a look at how you can minimise costs and how you can use these boxes in your beekeeping.\nLocation: Portchester Parish Hall\nOpen to/Cost: Free to members

SUMMARY:Members Meeting - October 2024
DESCRIPTION:Title:  Making Mead\nDate & Time: 22nd October\, 7:30 PM \nLocation: Portchester Parish Hall \nGuest Speaker: David Sandwell\, Judge at the Denmead Show \nBrief Description: David Sandwell is a well-known beekeeper from Waterlooville and a respected Honey Judge\, having judged many entries\, including at the South of England Show. David began beekeeping in 1980 with just one hive in his garden to improve pollination for his fruit trees and beans. Over time\, he moved to a vineyard and set up an out apiary\, gradually increasing his number of hives. To promote his honey sales\, David began showing his honey and has since earned over 600 prize cards. His hive count has now grown to 50+ colonies. \nDavid worked full-time as a Chartered Quality Professional with a Packaging Diploma. About 10 years ago\, he was invited to judge at a local honey show\, and since then\, requests for his judging services have grown significantly. In addition to honey judging\, David also speaks on “Mead Making” and “Ways in Which Honey Can Be Used with Different Types of Food.” Now retired\, he maintains 20 colonies of bees and is still frequently consulted for his extensive knowledge and experience in beekeeping. \nOpen to: Free for members

SUMMARY:February Members Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time: 27th February\, 7pm\nSpeaker: Andrew Durham \nTitle: Asian Hornet aka “Le Frelon Asiatique” – Beekeepers Guide – The Next Phase\nBrief description: \n\nWe are moving into a new phase in the war against the Asian Hornet. Climate change is exacerbating the situation across the Channel and we have no way of knowing whether the recent surge in Asian hornet nest numbers in north-west France and Belgium will drop back even if the weather returns to more normal patterns. We are seeing increasing numbers of incursions into the South-East where it is highly likely that the hornet now has a foothold from which to spread across the UK.  \nThis talk discusses what we can learn from what has happened across the Channel\, because the situation there is fast unravelling. \n\nLocation: Hybrid: Portchester Parish Hall /Online – Contact the secretary for online details.\nOpen to/cost: Free to members from HBA-affiliated associations
